And Leafs sign another Minnesotan. (From today's Toronto Star)

"The Leafs seem to be cornering the market on professional hockey players from Red Wing, Minn.

Their first out of the town of 20,000 was rookie centre John Pohl. Now comes word the Leafs have signed defenceman Reid Cashman, who apparently was a regular at the Pohl household for spaghetti dinners on Wednesdays.

GM John Ferguson Jr. said approximately six NHL teams were in the running for the 24-year-old former Hobey Baker finalist from the NCAA's Quinnipiac University Bobcats.

"He told me 10,000 Red Wing citizens are Leaf fans because we signed Pohl," Ferguson said last night while discussing Cashman.

"Then he says, if you sign me you get all 20,000."

Cashman will report today to the Leafs' main farm team, the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

His Connecticut-based university hockey team, from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Hockey League, was eliminated from its playoffs this week.

Cashman had three goals and 38 assists in 40 games for the Bobcats."

My sister-in-law is from Red Wing. I'll have to verify that with her. ;)

Former NHL'er Sjon Podein is also from Red Wing, I think.

Odd place for a hockey powerhouse, even in Minnesota.

    Pohl was a schoolboy legend.

I'd have to review the MSHSL year book, but I'm pretty sure there's never been a state hockey champion from southern MN.

Shattuck St. Mary out of Fairibault always has a phenomenal hockey team, but they play outside the jurisdiction of the MSHSL.
