It's not a part of the national conversation because it's a losing position for Dems. When they run on it, they lose.

Dems own guns too. Not in the Northeast or the West coast maybe, but they do in the rest of the country.

And, like with Republicans and abortion, Dems shoot themselves in the foot (no pun intended) when it comes to gun control.

Sure, most Americans favor "common sense gun control measures". But, too many Dems go off the reservation, and tell us what they really want, which is no guns in the hands of private citizens at all.

    From Jim Wright's Facebook page:
"President Obama begins laying out his plan to reduce gun violence.

Obama's actions will be via executive order, as such he will NOT be making any new laws instead he will simply be beefing up existing laws. He's been forced to go it alone because Congress will NOT act. Congress will not act because much of Congress (both conservative and liberal) is taking billions from the gun lobby and the rest are wet pantsed cowards who are utterly terrified of the gun lobby and more concerned with their own paychecks than living up to their oath of office. At the moment, only the President appears to have the courage to take action.

The president's plan is essentially thus: Keep guns away from the people that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US agrees shouldn't have them (i.e. those that are dangerously mentally ill and those that are criminals), provide additional funding and resources to enforce existing laws (exactly as gun rights advocates have demanded be done), provide federal funding to gun safety system research (you know, just like better brakes and seat belts for cars, that is give money TO gun manufactures to make better guns), and increase funding for mental healthcare (EXACTLY as the NRA and gun nuts have demanded).

None of this in anyway whatsoever impacts the rights of lawful, reasonably sane, responsible gun owners. None of it. None. At all. In any way.

Naturally the gun nuts are currently in the process of losing their goddamned minds. Tyranny! Tyranny! They wail! To arms! Man the bunkers! Lock and load! Social media is awash in pictures of pudgy camo-clad angry white men brandishing their semi-automatic penis extenders - because nothing says we're sane rational people like threatening to murder the president and all the people who disagree with you.

I expect the local NRA Klaverns to begin occupation of bird sanctuaries across the nation forthwith."

In related perspectives, Jim Wright on Michele Bachmann and her ilk:

People like this, they work so damned hard to try and convince you they themselves
helped carry their prophet's cross. In reality, they're the ones who pounded in the nails.

So if you like your guns, you can keep your guns? Sounds familiar.

    Three thoughts:
    1) That post by Jim Wright reads like something written by a North Korean PR flack for Kim Jong Un. Especially the part about President Obama being the only one with the courage to take action.
Please, your excellency, save us from ourselves! We know not what we do!

    2) The President has publicly acknowledged a concerted effort throughout his administration to circumvent the legislative processes of the Constitution and to challenge part of the Bill of Rights, based on little more than emotion and shaky logic. And this is embraced by half of the country ... why, exactly?
Even if you think he has good intentions, isn't this disconcerting (to say the least) considering the door it opens to insane abuses of power? If not by him, then by future presidents? What if he decides that the gun lobby has too much influence on Congress (as Jim Wright asserts) and he needs to rein that in by curtailing that pesky First Amendment? It's trying to save lives, after all.

    3) I mentioned his shaky logic. It's San Andreas level shaky.
First, he says this probably won't stop all of these mass murders. Then he breaks out the "If it'll save one life ..." card. Well, there's probably a hundred different things besides stricter gun control measures that would help. Some of those are probably rolled into his executive orders, to be fair, but it's still faulty open-ended logic that leads down a dangerous path.
The truly scary part is, this is just a trial balloon. He's seeing how far he can go without having to actually get any laws passed by Congress, and he's publicly stated his intentions as such. The more he accomplishes to that end, the bolder he'll get and the more he'll take a weed-whacker to the Constitution. Whether you're Team Elephant or Team Donkey, whether you think he's right or wrong on this particular issue, that should scare the ever-living shit out of every single person out there.
And if it doesn't, if you're a Democrat who thinks he's golden on all of this, think about the direct precedent he's setting for President Trump.

Nobody has explained how expanding background checks keeps stable, law-abiding citizens from owning guns.
OK, maybe you did something wrong when you were younger. You've gone straight and need a gun for protection? Is that what we're concerned about here?

Why would the government need to keep better track of stable, law-abiding citizens? Why would it want to?
