Well, let's be fair, positions are being eliminated, so it has very little, if anything to do with the writer in question. If they were letting people go by merit, there is no way Jeff Shain would be going anywhere.

I know a lot of people on that list. Heartbreaking.

Freep's got an auto writer. Full time? Not sure.

  4. Charlotte has David Poole. He might be the last full-time auto writer.

Weaker and/or less seniority = usually cheaper.

    It's not about your performance.

The decision on Shain and many others was was made at higher levels, as in, the bean counters.

Curt Cavin and Steve Ballard are full-time auto racing writers at the Indianapolis Star, so I don't think Poole is the only one left out there.

Ballard writes hoops in the offseason, if I'm not mistaken.

Dustin Long is still writing racing. What about Monte Dutton. Jenna Fryer?
There's nowhere near as many as there used to be but they're still out there.

I think the more shocking fact is that Miami, Orlando, Palm Beach and the S-S are all without full-time GOLF writers.

I agree. I don't think it has anything to do withthe person, how talented they are, how hard they work, etc. It's not an indictment of them. It's about how much money they make and how much he company can save by eliminating said position.

Face it, no one in management cares about what's actually written any more. Just make deadline, don't get us sued for libel, don't bill for OT and work more for less.
