Help in finding how much a job pays

Does anyone here have a strategy on the best way to find how much a job pays?

Reason I ask is there is an opening which would be a dream job for me. There are rumors that it pays more than what I'm making now, along with rumors that it pays substantially less. I wouldn't take it if it pays substantially less and I don't want to hurt my chances by asking the wrong way.
