Ah, the epitome of low-hanging fruit: The "Helen Thomas is ugly" line.

Helen is not pleased that Wayne State is terminating the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity award:

This is the most emailed piece at the NYT this morning, and interesting - maybe - in light of poor old Helen's comments.

Kind of like how Middle Eastern muslims view American muslims as posers.

I actually thought this was going to be about the new Nixon tapes and his comments about Jews in the military, or lack thereof (don't ask, don't kvell?).

As for the Times story, not really news. To me, it's like expecting all Americans to share a single political view. Not possible. Nor is it possible for all Israelis to share a single view. To believe otherwise is just naive.

News or not, it's sparked a great deal of interest. Not that 'most-emailed' is a precise metric. The commentary thread following the piece is interesting as well. http://community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2010/12/10/opinion/10iht-edcohen.html

I posted it because it raises some interesting points about how American news organizations now cover Israel. And about how that coverage has become much more complicated than it once seemed. Israel - and all the news that attends Israel - is becoming a kind of 'third rail' in the American press. There isn't much deviation allowed before the trouble starts.

I'd be interested, for example, in what Helen Thomas really meant when she used the word "Zionists."

    She's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack....

    http://www.arlnow.com/2011/01/06/helen-thomas-joins-falls-church-news-press/

“She is progressive, and following my more than eight hours of direct, one-on-one talks with her since the events of last June, I remain firmly convinced that she is neither bigoted, nor racist, nor anti-Semitic,” News-Press owner Nicholas Benton is quoted as saying in an article announcing Thomas’ column. Benton said he’s happy to be giving Thomas a “second chance.”
