Waylon Jennings was also from West Texas...

Eat at Ajuua's in Odessa and you won't be disappointed.

Make a trip to the Big Bend region- Fort Davis, Alpine, Marfa, Balmorhea, Marathon, Big Bend National Park. Unlike Odessa, the climate is mild and the scenery is beautiful.

Balmorhea has a fantastic, large spring-fed pool. Fort Davis State Park is pretty, has cool weather and is easy to get to from Odessa. Alpine and Marfa are very different but both have a few interesting diversions for visitors. Marathon is a place to stay if you want to be somewhere truly remote. The National Park's a long drive, but it's worth it. If there's enough water in the Rio Grande for boating, check out Desert Sports in Terlingua for rentals.

Cancun's awfully far to the southeast. And it's full of douchebags. But the Mexican state of Chihuahua is just the other side of the border. Take the bus on the new highway from Ojinaga to Cuidad Chihuahua- from there, the train to the magnificent Copper Canyon, a vastly under-appreciated (but mercifully under-touristed) area.

Eat the tex-mex and the barbecue. Go to at least one high school football game (but get there in advance, or you'll be sitting on the hood of your car in the parking lot.)

Depending on where you're coming from to get to Odessa you may want to detour to West, Texas for some kolaches at the Czech Stop. It's on I-35 just north of Waco.

The best dish on the menu at Jorge's is pescado y camarones en salsa de ajo y limon.

I should be flying into El Paso, driving to Odessa and then possibly driving to Dallas.

  10. Clear Springs Cafe in Midland right next to the high school football stadium and AA minor league stadium. On the road you take from the airport to either Midland or Odessa.

  11. Also Michael's Charcoal Grill in Midland. Great burgers and chicken sandwhiches. Set up in an old airplane hangar.

  12. If you do go to Lubbock, Orlando's is a must. It's a combinatin of Tex-Mex-Italian. Have to get the green chile potato soup.
