You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive (Brad Paisley; Patty Loveless also has a version, but it's not near as haunting, IMO):

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
You will never leave Harlan alive

Oh, my granddad's dad walked down
    Katahrins Mountain
And he asked Tillie Helton to be his bride
Said, won't you walk with me out of the mouth
    Of this holler
Or we'll never leave Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

No one ever knew there was coal in them mountains
'Til a man from the Northeast arrived
Waving hundred dollar bills he said I'll pay ya for your minerals
But he never left Harlan alive

Granny sold out cheap and they moved out west
    Of Pineville
To a farm where big Richland River winds
I bet they danced them a jig, laughed and sang a new song
Who said we'd never leave Harlan alive

But the times got hard and tobacco wasn't selling
And ole granddad knew what he'd do to survive
He went and dug for Harlan coal
And sent the money back to granny
But he never left Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
You will never leave Harlan alive

    Goddamn Lonely Love (Drive-By Truckers):

I got green and I got blues
and everyday there's a little less difference between the two.
    So I belly-up and disappear.
Well I ain't really drowning 'cause I see the beach from here.

I could take a Greyhound home but when I got there it'd be gone
along with everything a home is made up of.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Sister, listen to what your daddy says.
Don't be ashamed of things that hide behind your dress.
    Belly-up and arch your back.
Well I ain't really falling asleep; I'm fading to black.

You could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same
as that old motel room in Texarkana was.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Stop me if you've heard this one before:
A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor.
Stop me if I ever get that far.
The sun's a desperate star that burns like every single one before.

And I could find another dream,
one that keeps me warm and clean
but I ain't dreamin' anymore, I'm waking up.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love

    Wake Up (Alice In Chains):

Wake up young man, it's time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go
For 10 long years, for 10 long years
    The leaves to rake up
Slow suicide's no way to go, oh
    Blue, clouded grey
    You're not a crack up
Dizzy and weakened by the haze
    Moving onward
So an infection not a phase
    Yeah, oh

The cracks and lines from where you gave up
They make an easy man to read, oh
For all the times you let them bleed you
For little peace from God you plead, and beg
For little peace from God you plead
Ahhaahh, Yeah, Ahhaahh, Yeah, Ahhaahh, Yeah

Wake up young man, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
    Oh, yeah

Wake up young man, it's time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go, yeah
For 10 long years, for 10 long years,
    The leaves to rake up
Slow suicide's no way to go, oh
Slow suicide's no way to go
Wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up

    A little Neil Young:

    I caught you knockin'
    at my cellar door
    I love you, baby,
    can I have some more
    Ooh, ooh, the damage done.

    I hit the city and
    I lost my band
    I watched the needle
    take another man
    Gone, gone, the damage done.

    I sing the song
    because I love the man
    I know that some
    of you don't understand
    Milk-blood
    to keep from running out.

    I've seen the needle
    and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
    But every junkie's
    like a settin' sun.

I Still Pray (Kasey Chambers; the ache in her voice makes this recording):

I still cry for Baby Jesus
And I still pray when I'm alone
    And when I'm lost
    He'll come to find me
Because he died to save my soul

When I can't walk he's there to carry
When I speak he hears my words
When I wake and I have nothing
He sends me gold, frankincense and myrrh

When I cry my tears of sorrow
When my heart will only ache
And if I'm troubled when I'm sleeping
He will hold me until I wake

Some more Hank, Alone and Forsaken:

    We met in the springtime
    when the blossoms unfold,
    the pastures were green
    and the meadows were gold.
    Our love was in flower
    as summer grew on.
    Her love like the leaves
    now have withered and gone.
    The roses have faded
    there's frost at my door.
    The birds in the morning
    don't sing anymore.
    The grass in the valley
    is starting to die,
    and out in the darkness
    the whippoorwills cry.

    Alone and forsaken
    by fate and by man.
Oh Lord if you hear me
    please hold my hand,
    oh please understand.

Oh where has she gone to,
    oh where can she be.
    She may have forsaken
    some other like me.
    She promised to honor,
    to love and obey.
    Each vow was a plaything
    that she threw away.

    The darkness has fallen,
    the sky has turned gray,
    the hound in the distance
    is starting to bay.
    I wonder, I wonder
    what she's thinking of.
    Forsaken, forgotten,
    without any love.

Haunting for all the wrong reasons . . .

I hate myself and want to die - Nirvana

I Hate Myself And Want to Die

    Runny nose and runny yolk
even if you have a cold still
you can cough on me again
i still haven't had my fulfill

    It was Sunday X4
    What's that sound?

    Broken heart and broken bones
think about how a castrated horse feels
    one more quirky cliche' phrase
you're the one i wanna refill

    It was Sunday X4
    What's that sound?

    (incoherent mumble during the solo:)
    most people don't realize that
two large pieces of coral painted brown
and attached to his skull with common wood screws
would make a child look like a deer

    It was Sunday X4
    What's that sound?

    Runny nose and runny yolk
even if you have a cold still
you can cough on me again
i still haven't had my fulfill

    It was Sunday
    What's that sound? X4

Yay, I'm not alone (and forsaken) on this thread.

Steal the Crumbs (Uncle Tupelo; until I googled the lyrics, I had no idea Alanis did a version of this):

    Sidetracked down the middle
Never saw it coming, what a surprise
    It's been a wonder
    Electricity tells a story
It's a sound getting near as fear is watching you
    It's watching you close
You can fight it, both arms swinging
Or try to wash it away
Or pay up to the echoes of 'okay'
No more, no more will I see you
No more will I see you
No more will I see you
You've schemed more than you have
You've borrowed more than you know
    Better to steal the crumbs
It makes it easier to go
    Paralyzed by conscience
    Looking for an opening
Apathy as your vocal cords cut out
Never thought once to ask how's the temperature
Too busy with the finer points
    Of each struggle we're after
No more, no more will I see you
No more will I see you
No more will I see you
So long since I've seen you
Haven't we both been living the high life
    It flows to the bottom
No more, no more will I see you
No more will I see you
No more will I see you

Ode to Billy Joe by Bobby Gentry 19-67.
Don't know why this song haunts me,(I'm not from the south, was born after the song was made). I think its because of the casualness of the way they talk about Billy Joe's death at the dinner table. and Bobby Gentry's delivery combined with her rhapsy voice. Theory is the narrator and Billy Joe were in love and dropped a baby off the bridge--he then committed suicide out of guilt. Either that or Billy Joe was black and couldn't be with the girl he loved.

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

'n' Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well Billy Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
'n' Mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

'n' Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece-a apple pie, you know it don't seem right"
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now ya tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

'n' Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe
'n' Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

    Soul One (Blind Melon):

How come, girl was there when I needed one
How come, girl was there when the song is done
Some say, open your eyes to a brighter light
Okay, open my arms they were right
    She was my soul one
She felt she was the only one
She was the sun, the sky blue eyes
    She was my soul one

Inside, pain in my heart often made her cry
Outside, I cursed the birds and the sugar sky
How long take to realize she’s the one
How long until I find my lost and lonely soul one

    She was my soul one
She felt like the only one
She was the sun, the sky blue eyes
    She was my soul one

Should of never taken the time
’cause I found myself living a lonely lie
You said, you left to find yourself
But I never, no I never got the chance to say good-bye

She was my soul one I though she was.......

On the Banks of the Deep End (Gov't Mule):

on the banks of the deep end
where your soul is your best friend
    searching for a reason
    to go astray
    wild dreams turn to nightmares
silver clouds turn to golden stairs
and everything that you used to know
    is slipping away

    here i've got my puzzle-piece
only got it for a short term lease
    no time for asking
no going back to get hurt
i take a little from the mixture
try to fit it into the picture
got a place where you're standing
dig your shoes into the dirt

    trying hard to get back
    runnin' on the stones
    put you on my shoulders
we can be the only one
see the world's still spinning 'round
    gettin' dizzy when we look

there's a reason to be home
there's a feeling when you smile
but it feels like it might take over
    this feeling deep inside
and there's a distance down the line
    far away from the station
we can leave it all behind
    on a rolling creation

    sit away from the window
    and lock the door
can't you learn from the last time
    and the time before
see the world's still spinning 'round
    gettin' dizzy when we look

    got to leave town
to see the yellow flowers bloom
    sun going down
    it's gonna be rising soon

on the banks of the deep end
    twisted as a riverbend
searching for a reason to go astray

    you couldn't hire twenty-five men
to do what the man could do
just the sound of his walking
could split the whole damn town in two
into the night full of shadows
he still walks when the thunder rolls
    this river ain't shallow
reminds us that the bell still tolls

    bears in the kitchen
    tigers on tv
    the singer's pretending
    that this song's for me
see the world's still spinning 'round
    gettin' dizzy when we look

    you took a wrong turn
    down by the waterline
i heard they had to drag you off the sand
find a dune and the wind will miss you
hold on to a piece of dry land
got to hold on to a piece of dry land
got to hold on to a piece of dry land

on the bands of the deep end
where i lost my best friend
searching for a reason to go astray

    Red Light (Johnny Lang):

    You sing a song
While sitting at a red light
    You think of home
While sitting at a red light

    Too slow to roll
    Put your life on hold
    An open path
    With nowhere to go
    You start to wonder
While sitting at a red light

You can run a red light
Give up at a red light
    You break the mold
    When running through the tolls
    Speeding through your whole life

    A chance to breathe
While sitting at a red light
    You look around
    reflecting on your life

    A chance to think
    Am I drinkning too much
    Should I keep going
Lose the life that I love
    A second glance
When coming to a red light

You can run a red light
Give up at a red light
    You break the mold
    When running through the tolls
    Speeding through your whole life

    When things look low
    You've gotta keep stong
    Feet to the grass
    You've gotta walk it off
    The bows been tied
    Too tight to laugh
    Feet to the ground
    You've gotta walk it off

You can run a red light
You can run a red light

    Start to think
    Am I drinkning too much
    Should I keep going
Lose the life that I love

You can run a red light
Give up at a red light
    You break the mold
    When running through the tolls
    Speeding through your whole life

You can run a red light
Give up at a red light
    You break the mold
    When running through the tolls
    Speeding through your whole life

You can run a red light
You can run a red light

    You sing a song
While sitting at a red light
