Keep Me in Your Heart (Warren Zevon, written after he learned he had terminal lung cancer)

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for awhile

There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for awhile

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for awhile

These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for awhile

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Keep me in your heart for awhile

May, Eminem has some legitimately haunting lyrics. That song isn't one of them, esp. if one is female.

Here's one for IJAG and I -- Flinch by Alanis

That last non-hook part gets me every time, chick. So powerful the way she sings it.

You don't generally associate her with haunting lyrics. She's angry, yadda, yadda, yadda. I think that's one reason that song is so moving.

I think the 'Your House' a capella version (not the acoustic) is super haunting.

Ditto. Best hidden track, like ever.

According to your definition, the Eminem lyrics that I posted "haunt" me.

My last girlfriend used me for pretty much all I was. She was considerably younger than me and just wanted an older guy at that point in here life to use him for things. She did that to me, and then I got wise and was done with it. Ever since that break-up, those lyrics have stuck with me and how I will never let another female use me in a relationship.

"It was a shock, it struck me as odd, but it turned me on
You started gettin moody on me, pretty soon we'd argue
And the ruder you got, the more beautiful you got to me"

Looking back on the relationship, the more we disagreed, it seemed the closer we got, and therefore the more beautiful she got to me.

"But when someone seems too good to be true, they usually are
But see, when you're in it it's too hard to see"

Everyone told me that she was bad news. But I couldn't see. I thought she was special, obviously not.

So, in your terms, these lyrics haunt me to remind me of my old relationship and how I will never be used again.

Re: Haunting lyrics that you dig

This is the very definition of a haunting song about a haunting topic (a tribute to someone who commited suicide). The lyrics are more than enough, but the complementary music makes it easily one of my top three all-time favorites.

    Danko/Manuel (by Drive-by Truckers):

Let the night air cool you off.
Tilt your head back and try to cough.
Don't say nothing 'bout the things you never saw.
Let the night air cool you off.

    I ain't living like I should.
A little rest might do me good.
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood.
    Now I ain't living like I should.

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can only hear it in my head.
Fifteen years ago we owned that road
now it's rolling over us instead.

    Richard Manuel is dead.

God forbid you call their bluff.
    Like the nightmares ain't enough.
Remember when we used to think that we were tough?
God forbid you call their bluff.

First they make you out to be
the only pirate on the sea.
Then they say Danko would have sounded just like me.
"Is that the man you want to be?"

Can you hear that song? It sounds like gold.
Maybe I could make it bigger overseas.
Fifteen years ago we owned this road
now it only gives us somewhere else to leave.

    Something else you can't believe.

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can hear poor Richard from the grave
singin' where to reap and when to sow
when you've found another home you have to leave.

    Something else you can't believe.

One of the first things I thought of. Great song.

    Favorite, single line category:

"Contemplating suicide or a graduate degree"

    --"Working Girls," The Pernice Brothers

    Slightly longer...

"If so and so was so delightful,
Go ahead, don’t waste you life.
Shed it like a change of season.
Send a letter where the grass is greener.

Haven’t been to sleep much lately.
Words you never said that grate on me.
Keep a secret flake of his life,
    Call it happiness.

It would have been nice to be someone.
To have and to hold, the only one.
    But when 7:30 comes around
    There’s nothing there, just bitterness.

Always the last to know and the first to cry.
    Our summer years are nothing
    As they’re freudian-slipping by"

I know most people don't associate Blind Melon and haunting, but they have some really underrated lyrics.

    Change

I dont feel the suns comin out today
Its staying in, its gonna find another way.
As I sit here in this misery, I dont
Think Ill ever see the sun from here.
And oh as I fade away,
Theyll all look at me and say, and theyll say,
Hey look at him! Ill never live that way.
    But thats okay
    Theyre just afraid to change.
When you feel your life aint worth living
Youve got to stand up and
Take a look around you then a look way up to the sky.
And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin its time to die.

And as we all play parts of tomorrow,
Some ways will work and other ways well play.
But I know we all cant stay here forever,
So I want to write my words on the face of today.
    And then theyll paint it
And oh as I fade away,
Theyll all look at me and theyll say,
Hey look at him and where he is these days.
When life is hard, you have to change.

Because I mentioned it was haunting, the last verse of Stan.

Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
and here's an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the Starter cap
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I musta missed you
Don't think I did that shit intentionally just to diss you
But what's this shit you said about you like to cut your wrists too?
I say that shit just clowning dog,
c'mon - how fucked up is you?
You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling
to help your ass from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And what's this shit about us meant to be together?
That type of shit'll make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
before you hurt yourself, I think that you'll be doin just fine
if you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Stan
why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a fan
I just don't want you to do some crazy shit
I seen this one shit on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
and had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
and in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
    Damn!

Re: Haunting lyrics that you dig

    This feeling I can't shake
my life is now at stake
    I can't remember when
came the beginning of the end
    And when I step outside
    these demons I can't hide
    No more through the motions
I'm adrift on a darkened ocean

    Left to my own devices
the pull is just too strong
I've seen 'em pay their prices
    it's a family's siren song

    There's no need to wonder
    I've already taken stock
I know the place where I'll end up
a crash victim -- on the rocks

    Water, water everywhere
    I never fail to think
    Water, water everywhere
that I can break this link
    Water, water everywhere
    I never fail to drink
    Water, water everywhere
so meet me on the brink
    Water, water everywhere
    the farther down I sink

Some days I make it through
but they're far between and few
    Somewhere I got lost
on a path with a heavy cost
    No secret to the cause
    I can't escape my flaws
    Someday you'll understand
that I was drowning on dry land

    Left to my own devices
the pull is just too strong
I've seen 'em pay their prices
    it's a family's siren song

    There's no need to wonder
    I've already taken stock
I know the place where I'll end up
a crash victim -- on the rocks

    Water, water everywhere
    I never fail to think
    Water, water everywhere
that I can break this link
    Water, water everywhere
    I never fail to drink
    Water, water everywhere
so meet me on the brink
    Water, water everywhere
    the farther down I sink
