In My Hour of Darkness (Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris):

in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
once I knew a young man
    went driving through the night
miles and miles without a word
    with just his high-beam lights
who'd have ever though they'd build
    such a deadly Denver bend
to be so strong, to take so long as
    it would till the end
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
another young man safely strummed his
    silver string guitar
and he played to people everywhere
some say he was a star
but he was just a country boy
    his simple songs confess
and the music he had in him so very few possess
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
then there was an old man, kind and wise with age
and he read me just like a book and he
    never missed a page
and I loved him like my father
and I loved him like my friend
and I knew his time would shortly come
but I did not know just when
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed

    Nutshell (Alice in Chains)

    ; We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
    And yet I fight
    And yet I fight
    This battle all alone
    No one to cry to
    No place to call home

    Oooh...oooh...
    Oooh...oooh...

My gift of self is raped
    My privacy is raked
    And yet I find
    And yet I find
    Repeating in my head
If I cant be my own
    Id feel better dead

    Oooh...oooh...
    Oooh...oooh...

Maybe this isn't in the direction this thread is heading...Perhaps more poetic than haunting...

    Paul Simon's "Graceland"

    And she said losing love
Is like a window in your heart
    Everybody sees you're blown apart
    Everybody sees the wind blow

This song makes me cry every time. Don't know if it's haunting..but my mom lost her mother last year.

    "The Baby," Blake Shelton

    My brother said that I
    was rotten to the core.
    I was the youngest child,
so I got by with more.

I guess she was tired by
    the time I came along.
    She'd laugh until she cried,
    I could do no wrong.
    She would always save me,
    because I was her baby.

I worked a factory in Ohio,
a shrimp boat in the Bayou,
I drove a truck in Birmingham.
    Turned 21 in Cincinnati,
I called home to mom and daddy,
I said "Your boy is now a man."
    She said "I don't care if you're 80,
    you'll always be my baby."

    She loved that photograph,
    of our whole family.
    She'd always point us out,
for all her friends to see.

    That's Greg he's doing great,
    he really loves his job.
And Ronnie with his 2 kids,
how 'bout that wife he's got.
    And that one's kinda crazy,
but that one is my baby.

I got a call in Alabama,
said come on home to Louisianna
and come as fast as you can fly.
Cause your momma really needs you,
and says she's got to see you,
she might not make it through the night.
The whole way I drove 80
so she could see her baby.

She looked like she was sleepin'
and my family had been weepin'
by the time that I got to her side.
And I knew that she'd been taken,
and my heart it was breakin',
I never got to say goodbye.

    I softly kissed that lady
and cried just like a baby.

Mayfly, I fear you if you consider either of those songs "haunting."

    They're rage-filled. They're violent, to a point.

They don't haunt. They frighten. Haunting, to me, are lyrics that stick with you, that sink into the deepest part of you and cause an aching.

This thread is not getting rapjacked.

And IJAG, as the youngest of six kids who lives 1,200 miles away from aging parents, that song gets me every time.

HB- I'm totally with you on the Hallelujah, but I think Rufus Wainwright's version might be my fave.

Give Back the Key to My Heart (Unce Tupelo w/Doug Sahm):

take my picture off the wall
it don't matter to me at all
said I was headed for a fall
but you wanted me to crawl

    give back my TV
it don't mean that much to me
while you're giving back my things
give me back the key to my heart

give back the key to my heart
give back the key to my heart
and let my love flow like a river
    straight into your heart, dear

well, you say I was the one
to blame for the wrong that's been done
well, you got a friend named cocaine
and to me he is to blame

he has drained life from your face
    he has taken my place
while you're alone in San Antone
give me back the key to my heart

give back the key to my heart
give back the key to my heart
and let my love flow like a river
    straight into your heart, dear
