When I was a kid, Elvis movies always played on the independent (now CW) station. While many of his movies are not distinguished even by their music, I always thought Elvis seemed like a cool, older brother who was also a singer/racecar driver/tour guide/helicopter pilot/lifeguard.

    Happy birthday!

So why was Elvis such a big deal?

This is as close to perfection as you can get in music.

Sure, he became a joke, but at one time, he was as good as it gets.

How do you know you’re not going to see him at KFC today?

We used to see him every Halloween at the East Memphis Perkins at Highland and Poplar at midnight. Then he broke up with 'Cilla and started showing up with Meryitamun or Marylin Monroe.

    Right there with Jerry Garcia.

Elvis movies were mostly loud, stupid fun. They ran alongside Frankie and Annette on UHF stations during the summer. The one exception was Jailhouse Rock.

I've never been a fan of Aloha From Hawaii. He looked and sounded like he was phoning it in. The Las Vegas concert was a much better show.

5C9ACFCE-DBEF-40C3-B0CA-0047B5D9B37D.jpeg I don’t know if it’s there anymore but there was an Elvis museum in Orlando
It had a pair of his karate ghees and one of his Cadillacs
I bought my Elvis shot glass there
The star exhibit was the DEA badge, in a case below the picture of Elvis with Nixon, where it was apparent the King was stoned out of his gourd

I was looking that story up this afternoon, and was surprised to read, as of 2015, that Nixon photo is the most requested picture from the National Archives.
