I remember the first CD I heard — Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" — and was amazed by how you can zap instantaneously from track to track.

I think the first CD I actually bought was Nine Inch Nails' "Pretty Hate Machine" in 1990. Those long boxes in American stores at the time were a pain in the ass.

I can remember my second-grade teacher telling me -- in 1982 -- that "laser discs" were being made that would never wear out, always have perfect sound and would make the record obsolete.

I couldn't believe it. Spent years looking for them until they finally started showing up in stores a couple of years later.

My first: the self-titled Damn Yankees album. I was into bad hair-metal balladeers (and, as a 70s-rock fan, I liked Ted Nugent and Styx). Still have it. Probably haven't spun it in 15 years.

Like Bubbler, I still buy CDs. I prefer to have something tangible, I still like liner notes. And I also own 200+ albums on vinyl and two record players, so it's not like I'm too hip on current music technology :). I was pretty heavy into the tape-trading scene. Even though it has become the "music-downloading scene," I still burn every concert I download onto audio CDs.

How do you people remember the first CDs you bought? I don't remember the last one I bought.

    It was Pantera.

Can't remember the last one I bought or played. If I ever venture into the record store at the mall these days it is to only check out the discount book bin or get Huggy Jr. a DVD for Christmas or his birthday.

    2)

    3) ??? I don't remember...the 1st two I got for Christmas '92, no clue after that.

So, I was 10 years behind the times!!! Gotta love living in the middle of the sticks.

My first batch of CDs was the "7 for a penny" deal from BMG, after I got my first CD player for Christmas in 1994. It was a great way to get a collection started from scratch.
    The first seven were:
    1) 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged
    2) Eric Clapton Unplugged
    3) The Reality Bites Soundtrack
    4) Sarah McLachlan, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
    5) Boyz II Men, CooleyHighHarmony
    6) Stone Temple Pilots, Core
    7) Aerosmith, Pump

Ended up giving the Sarah McLachlan CD to a girl I was banging (not even dating, just banging). Still have the rest, sitting alongside my circa 1996 Aiwa CD/tape/radio that, 16 years later, works and sounds as good as the day I bought it.

I got a CD boombox (!) for Xmas in 1988. Was in a retro mood at the time. My first CD was The Kinks - Lola vs. Powerman & The Moneygoround. I'm feeling a little pride looking back at that one as my first.

Wow. I've found the one person alive besides my wife who has ever heard of these bands.

I was a little late going to CDs (about 1997) because I always thought they cost too much, but I finally broke down and got a CD player at the mall and then went to the Wherehouse in the mall and purchased Metallica's "Re-Load" which had just been released, and Boston's greatest hits CD as my first two. I also remember that my last cassette purchased was the reissue of Rush's "2112" from Columbia House. After those first two CD purchases it's a blur, as I joined BMG to get a bunch of CDs and started getting CDs from Columbia House, and my collection multiplied pretty quickly.

Now, I hardly buy any CDs (unless I get a good deal), and I don't download MP3s too much either, as I spend most of my listening time on Slacker Radio on my smartphone.

Me and two of my friends actually had a dance number for a song off that dcTalk cd.
Actually, all the guys in dcTalk are still active in other ventures, Kevin Max just joined a revamped Audio Adrenaline, Michael Tait is the lead singer of Newsboys now...and TobyMac just went No. 1 on Billboard with his new cd "Eye On It" after his first week, so not exactly true on the "no one else" mantra. LOL
