I was in the crowd yesterday, and when Menino had his fit of mumblitis, that moment instantly became another "ionic" point in Boston sports history ... still, if the T runs on time (which occasionally it does), that's what matters most in a mayor ... not to be overlooked was the difficulty they had in getting the drape off the statue ... it looked as though it might topple over in the process, a la Saddam Hussein ... all that said, it was a terrific event, the statue looks great, and Orr, who inwardly was probably chagrined at being the focal point of it all, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself ... Sanderson looked about 100 years old, but a healthy 100 ... best surprise was hearing from the sculptor, Harry Weber ... terrific stuff from him, and it turns out he is from St. Louis, where he was watching the game in question on TV ...

I can't tell from the Globe pictures -- how is the thing held up? Is there a pole that goes into his midsection or something?

all the weight is propped on the back skate which is set in something resembling a spray of ice chips (the only detail they took any liberties with) ....
