Today is the 40th anniversary of one of the most amazing sports upsets in modern history.

Here's the game for those that haven't seen it, actually a damn fine hockey game.

And the very good HBO documentary that was released early this century.

And the AP stories that ran on that day.

Great, great moment, and a great memory for me as an 11-year-old. I got that HBO doc on DVD, as well as "Miracle."

And, this morning I caught this Yahoo story on the last two cuts from that Olympic team (yes, one of them is Ralph Cox). A good read.

I was 10 at the time and was really into the Olympics. What I remember was that WABC showed a movie every weekday at 4:30 and it was Planet of the Apes week. I didn’t want to be spoiled so I didn’t watch the news or let my mom or brother do so either. Went nuts when we scored at the end of the 2nd period and then went simply crazy when we went ahead.

If my memory is correct, the Finland game started at 11 a.m. on Sunday and they told us at Hebrew school (which went from 9:30-11:30) that we could leave at 10:30 if we wanted to watch the game.

The greatest moment in U.S. sports history, and it's not even close.

Great memories here. I went to Atlanta to see Jim Craig’s first NHL game in 1980. Incredible atmosphere at the Omni with all of us waving little American flags.

So even on ABC it was “plausibly live?”

It got a lot closer to that scenario this weekend.
I shouldn't let what happened spoil it for me, but you know? It does. I'm sorry, but it really does.
