Halladay throws perfect game in Florida

Fifteen percent of all the perfect games in MLB history have been thrown since July. They're still significant as an individual performance, but from a historical perspective, their increased frequency as of late necessarily makes them less special.

I agree with a perfect game's significance as an individual performance, but it's such a small sample size that it's tough to break it down in frequency.

It's a statistical anomaly. If there's another half-dozen thrown this season, then you can try this argument again.

You can't be serious right? 20 perfect games in the history of baseball and because three of them are in the past 10 months they're less special? Huh?

  5. People got ho-hum about Triple Crown winners too in the 70s, but as pointed out, that was an anomoly as well. Been a while since Affirmed did it
Always good to enjoy them while they are around, rather than dismiss them

Yeah, I'm not going to agree with you.

In the same breath, Mike Cameron and Shawn Green hit 4 homers in a game in the same month (May of 2002). Then Carlos Delgado became the 15th player to do it in 2003.

I'm sure some short-sighted people thought it was watered down. But a 4-homer game hasn't happened in seven years now.

If we can't necessarily get behind YGBFKM's theory, maybe we could just agree that it's a more special occasion to hit four home runs in a game, considering that's only ever happened 15 times. Not only that, a four-homer outburst is entirely an individual effort, unlike a perfect game.

I would probably agree with that, though they're pretty close.

Can't believe nobody posted "There's no such thing as a perfect game in Florida."

Twenty times in major-league history. It's that big of a deal. And it always will be. Don't kid yourself believing it's losing its luster.

And Halladay was just filthy on Saturday. Outside of one bouncer that Maybin hit that was close to being an infield hit, the Marlins weren't even CLOSE to getting a hit. It was masterful.

Anyone have a time machine? The Marlins are selling unused tickets for face value.

That's a genius move, and incredibly tacky at the same time.
