    Pat Robertson's take on it:

Every time I think people can't suck more, they find a way to prove me wrong.

Didn't take long for the crazy wingnut brigade to chime in, did it?

I'm sure our gal Sarah will be along shortly as soon as she finds Haiti on a map.

Meanwhile, normal people will band together and do what they can to help.

And Houston, Memphis, Atlanta and Baton Rouge didn't exactly absorb those Katrina refugees very well. There were massive spikes in crime in those cities in the couple of years post-Katrina. And that was with refugees who had family to live with. Imagine dumping 50,000 Haitian refugees onto the streets of Miami, with no place to live or work, little education and little grasp of the English language?
Plus, like Meat said, it's not like you can just zap them out of there with a teleporter. You have to find them. You have to catalogue them (for lack of a better term). You have to fly or ship them to a country willing to take them, and where they want to be. You think Cuba wants a couple hundred thousand destitute Haitians thrust on them?

Enough Limbaugh. Enough Robertson. Here's some testimony about the land of Duvalier from someone whose family lived it.

Has anyone been scanning the AP photo wire today? Why do so many of the photos have a disclaimer that say they can't be published in the Dominican Republic?

Probably from photogs from DR papers whose papers have exclusivity. And is there much, if any, damage in DR, which had to feel some of the shake?

Not sure, but could it be to do with their being Agence France Presse photos? Not sure what their situation is there, but obviously Haiti is a French-speaking country, and the DR isn't.

ETA: Clerk's explanation might make more sense. And apparently not. The buildings are sturdier, for one thing. And it was a fair distance from the epicenter.

Seriously? The way the world is today, we're just going to take in boatloads of people from a third world country with no way of verifying their criminal history? Yes, they need aid. But it's not a good idea to just let people into this country unchecked. Do you have any idea how bad crime is in Port Au Prince?

Just found out a friend of mine from HS was working there with his wife and a dozen other people from our hometown on a mission. All are safe.
