Gumby Creator Art Clokey Is Dead
    By PopEater Staff

Art Clokey, the animator who created the lovable, bendable clay creation Gumby over a half-century ago, died in his sleep Friday in Los Osos, Calif., his son told the Los Angeles Times. Clokey, who was 88, had been stricken with persistent bladder infections.

Clokey invented Gumby in the early 1950s which led to his making animated shorts featuring the figure and his horse pal Pokey for the 'Howdy Doody Show.' It was his wife Ruth's idea to give him the appearance of a gingerbread man.

Soon enough, Gumby had his own show, 'The Adventures of Gumby,' which was the first to use claymation on TV.

And another element from the soundtrack of my youth is silenced.

I can remember getting dressed for school plenty of mornings with "The Adventures of Gumby and Pokey" on the TV. Pokey had the coolest cartoon voice, far, far better than Gumby's.

And the Blockheads were hilarious. They always had these pissed-off looks as they wreaked havoc.

    RIP, Art.

Not invited to the party, and evidently pissed about it:

    Nicely done, Joe.

Forgot about Boo (?) and Prickle, IIRC.

    As an aside:

I hope and pray this runs in my obit one day:

"Died in his sleep at his home in Los Osos, Calif."

There's no better place to live out your golden years than Los Osos. And of course no better way to die.

    Nelson Rockefeller might dispute that.

Google is honoring Clokey's would-be 90th birthday with a Google Doodle today.
