Double Down, I wish I could take credit for the "emotional porn" comment, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't me. Could have been, but I don't remember ever typing it. Plus, I still love the show.

Never mind, I just searched for it, and you posted it, crediting it to me in a "conversation we once had." So OK. I have no recollection, but I'll take it.

That was my issue with the finale. I thought the show had really recovered after that debacle with Meredith's near-death.

I really enjoyed it up until Burke left Christina at the altar. I thought Derek's speech asking Meredith to shit or get off the pot was understandable, I thought based on the previous idiocy of Izzie, it was very understandable that she would try to push George like she did. I thought Burke's vows were great, thought Alex rejecting amnesia chick was right in character. Even George failing his exam was understandable considering what he went through this season.

But . . . . they have to balance the tragedy with something good once in a while. As you said, those moments of sadness have to be earned by the writers and the show. Yes, Sandra Oh's breakdown was very well-acted . . . . but at this point, it feels like the writers are just insulting the audience by throwing as much negativity at the wall and seeing what sticks long enough for a sweeps three-parter.

It makes a show unwatchable, because the viewer is all too aware that the writers are choosing to be manipulative rather than trying to tell compelling stories about interesting characters.

    Didn't want to start a new thread; watching my tape of last week's episode. . . . . .

Gray's is now where Gilmore Girls was for me two years ago, Alias was in its fourth year, and where all formerly good shows are when they lose it: I watch, because I committed to it. But I really want it to get cancelled so I don't have to watch anymore.

I love the show personally, but that's OK.

My from-the-beginning fandom of this show will not allow me to lower expectations to enjoy the drivel they have shoveled our way for a while now. It has built up enough goodwill to stick with it, but not enough to continue to think "Wow, this is good television."

I no longer throw in with a show that took its three strongest female characters and destroyed one by having her left at the altar, sent another to LA and now has the other one completely broken from what she used to be, with a dork husband who is cheating to add to her woes. Izzie used to constantly try to convince everyone how responsible she is; now she's just another whore sleeping with a married man. Callie used to be a strong and interesting character; now she's a crybaby who would fit in on a show about teenage angst.

The main character can't even act like a human being to an intern who is begging for at least a conversation, so the writers can give us a whole season of "Gee, will THAT moment be the one that turns them into true sisters?!"

    Blech.

I don't know if you saw it or not, Piotr, but if you missed it, some of us were ranting about how bad Grey's is over on the Season Premieres thread. We're pretty much in agreement on everything.

And spup, it's fine to still like the show. But if you look at it critically, and judge it on its artistic merits, it's a disaster. It may still be entertaining, but it's clearly run off the rails.

That said, the second episode of this season wasn't nearly as bad as the premiere. And you know why? Because Shonda Rhimes didn't write it.

    Two things:

I lost it when Izzie saved a FUCKING DEER with hospital equipment, then gave some speech about being the kind of woman who lets a kid convince her she can do the impossible.

    Yet, I'm still Tivoing it.

I did like the part last week where Burke's mom asked Meredith if she was being immature (?) or selfish when she did the "It's over. It's so over" at the altar. Glad someone finally called her on it.

I had mixed feelings about that. It was a little too meta for me. It was like the writers were apologizing for the awfulness of last season's finale, and how much it got ripped.

I do think it's funny that Lexi is just as self-obsessed as Meredith. Thanks dad.

Someone SHOULD apologize for last season's finale!

that being said, I didn't think I could dislike anyone like I dislike Meredith, in terms of self-obsession. But no, here comes the wide-eyed intern who STOPS A ROLLING TRAUMA PATIENT to tell Meredith she's her sister.

Barf. Any real hospital, she'd have been run over and spun out of the way.
