The best of my lifetime, I think, comes down to Michael Phelps vs. Carl Lewis. It would take a while for me to figure out which one to pick, but I think I would say Phelps.

Frank Kugler. Only person to win medals in three different sports at the same Olympics -- wrestling, weightlifting and tug of war.

Discussion title needs to be changed.

    It says "Greatest Olympian"

But survey question (and all choices underneath) says "Greatest U.S. Olympian."

I think I'm OK with Phelps ahead of Lewis for best Olympian of my lifetime. Sixteen gold medals ain't half bad.

Unless we're talking Tiny Lister, last I checked, Zeus was Greek.

Phelps today convinced me he's our greatest Olympic athlete ever; his individual and team success strung out over 3 Olympiads is unmatched.

What Eric Heiden did at Lake Placid was so rare no one even TRIES it anymore. Five races five gold medals, ranging from 500 meters to 10,000 meters. That was phenomenal!

I put that and Phelps going 8 for 8 in Beijing as the two greatest individual sporting accomplishments in my lifetime.
