    Sirs, Madames,

If you're going by intramural teams, I played on:

The Seven Pillars of Islam (1972)
The Hollywood Stars (ditto, homage to Chuck Connors)
Norm's Open Kitchen (aka Toronto's best drug drop, then next to Stage 212)
The Riverdale Rodents (we played a team of lawyers known as the Badgers)

    YHS, etc

I like the Hutchinson (Kan.) Salt Hawks. The town was built on the salt industry -- Morton had a huge mine there, but the salt mines are hollow now and used for storage. Never a bad idea to pay homage to town history with nicknames.

    A couple from Texas:

    Frost Polar Bears
    Itasca Wampus Cats

Years ago, a copy editor was trying to figure out the girls mascot for Cameron Yoe High School. The boys were the Yoemen; we figured the girls would be the Yohos or the Yomamas. Turns out they are the Yoettes.

There are a lot of unbelievable former nicknames for college women's teams before people realized how ridiculously sexist they were. I believe South Carolina's women (remember, the men are the Gamecocks) used to be called the Chicks, and Mercer's women (men are the Bears) were the Teddy Bears.

Then, of course, there are the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens, so named because in the '40s and '50s the team was sponsored by Harvest Queen Mill, and an alumnus who owned a small airline provided the team with free air travel to games. Hence, the Flying Queens.

There was a high school in Iowa many, many years ago that used the nickname Cowfeeders.

The girls' basketball team? You got it. Cowfeederettes.

Bridgeport (Texas) boys' teams are the Bulls. The girls are the Sissies.

Why not: Otherwise they'd be the Cows or the Lady Bulls.

    More Texas mascot greatness:

    Amarillo High Sandies.
    Amarillo Palo Duro Dons.
    Baytown Lee Ganders.
    Deer Park Deer.
    El Paso Del Valle Conquistadores.
    Flower Mound Marcus Marauders.
Fort Worth Poly Parrots. (Think about it.)
    Fredericksburg Battlin' Billies.
    Freeport Brazosport Exporters.
Frisco Raccoons (they were simply the Coons until 2001.)
    Lewisville Fighting Farmers.
    Mesquite Skeeters.
    New Braunfels Unicorns. (Wazzup Kokane)
    Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs.
    Robstown Cottonpickers.
    San Antonio Lanier Voks.
    Springtown Porcupines.
(I think someone else mentioned Hereford and Pampa.)
    Seguin Matadors.
    Texas City Stingarees.
    Weatherford Kangaroos.

And that's just in 4A and 5A. It gets better the smaller you go.

Some of these have been mentioned in the thread, but I nominate the Division II Gulf South Conference as having the best collection of nicknames:

University of West Florida Argonauts (not great, but bear with me)
University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils
    Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys
Delta State University Statemen (their unofficial nickname is better: The Fighting Okra)
    Henderson State University Reddies
    Southern Arkansas University Muleriders

Actually, the Solar Bears were an IHL team. The Lizard Kings were in the ECHL, along with teams like the Florida Everblades, Baton Rouge Kingfish (Hey! to Huey Long!) and Louisiana IceGators (say the nickname fast).
