Five pages in and no mention (I may have missed it) of the Albuquerque Isotopes baseball team

When I covered high schools in Vermont, Green Mountain Valley had Gumbies as its nickname.

Now that I'm in upstate New York (the part actually north of the Thruway), we've got the Doane Stuart Thunder Chicken.

For irony, I love the Mount Pleasant High Kilties (Providence). Think any of the predominantly Italian, African-American and recent Asian immigrant student population there has ever worn a kilt?
I hope John Kricfalusi got some royalties from the Montgomery Biscuits. Their mascot is a dead ripoff of Muddy Mudskipper.

My high school alma mater in Iowa had the Bears for boys and Bruinettes for girls. I'm sure they've changed it by now, but we always had that great girls sports bumper sticker that said:
We love our blondes, redheades and Bruinettes!

Ohio has some fun ones. Sorry about the long list.
    Columbus Africentric Nubians
Lima Bath Wildcats (girls were called the Wildkittens until the 2008-09 school year)
    Lyndhurst Brush Arcs
New Washington Buckeye Central Bucks (girls are Buckettes; why not the Does, I don't know)
    Cleveland Collinwood Railroaders
    Columbus School for Girls Unicorns
    Crooksville Ceramics
    Akron East Orientals
East Canton Hornets (boys) and Wizards (girls); I have no idea why they're different
    Cleveland East Technical Scarabs
Milan Edison Chargers (OK, Chargers isn't that different, but Milan is the birthplace of Thomas Edison, hence the Chargers)
Fremont Ross Little Giants (or as I like to call them, Regular-size People)
    University Heights Fuchs Mizrachi Mayhem
    Cleveland Glenville Academic Campus Tarblooders
    Cleveland Jane Addams Executives
    Cleveland John Marshall Lawyers
    Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds
Rocky River Lutheran West Longhorns (Longhorns? In Ohio??)
Cincinnati Madiera Mustangs (boys) and Amazon (girls)
    Mansfield Christian Flames
    Lima Perry Commodores
    Duncan Falls Philo Electrics
Piketon Redstreaks (Redstreaks? Really?? Great for a girls team)
Mansfield Senior Tygers (Yes, with a 'y')
    Marion Harding Presidents
    Plain City Shekinah Christian Flames
Shelby Whippets (the dog, not the whipped crème can sniffing high)
Fremont St. Joseph Crimson Streaks (great, another red color and streaks – awesome for a girls team)
    Chillicothe Unioto Sherman Tanks
    Huntington Valley University School Preppers
    Wellington Dukes

Big Spring (Texas) is also the Steers, and the girls teams are the Lady Steers.

Think about that one for a second.

New Berlin (IL) is also the Pretzels, and home to the Pretzeldome, as well.

Cairo, Ill., is home to the Pilots, and its girls teams, the Co-Pilots.

From the great state of Washington, I nominate the Davenport Gorillas.

In our coverage area, we have two schools (one on each side of the border) named the Honkers. It's always fun when their teams win, if only because of 'See HONKERS, page B2' :D

Two schools in my coverage area used to be the "Whiz Kids" and "Blue Bolts" until a while ago. Now they're the "Lakes" and "Bays." Blah.

    Ditto.

When that hockey team folded, it was succeeded by a new club - Macon Trax.
