III was Important and Great - Lot of drama and interesting sidebars

 

I still can't fathom St. Louis only putting up 17 in XXXVI.

 

XIII should be in there instead of XXXVI, but good list.

 

The Chiefs would have kicked the Vikings' ass the next year anyway....

 

There's a good possibility there wouldn't have been a next year had the Colts stomped the Jets like they were supposed to.

 

The hard-to-believe category:

The Patriots scored more first-quarter points against the fearsome Bears in 1986 than the three Tom Brady teams have combined for in the first quarters of their Super Bowls.

 

That game IV was going to be played no matter what.

 

Maybe I'm nuts, but I'm just not sold on XIII.

Pittsburgh led 35-17 with three minutes to play. Cowboys score with less than 2:30 to play, recover onside kick, score with less than 30 seconds to play, then don't recover the onside.

Kind of a frantic finish, but I gave XXXVIII the edge. It had a 37-point fourth quarter and the realization that had Fox not started going for two waaaaaay too early, the Panthers might well have led by three when Kasay inexplicably kicked off out of bounds.

 

SB III is the greatest in it's place in history.

But...

What if I said 15-18 (possibly more) HOF players were on the field,

and

only two penalties were called,

and

there was a dramatic confrontation on midfield,

and

A blocked punt turned the tide of the game,

and

two of the greatest catches were ever made,

and

the game winning score was on a long bomb the the QB never saw completed because he was knocked cold stepping up in the pocket,

and

the game was finally ended by an interception in the end zone.

Then you would have Super Bowl X.

 

Just like people cannot fathom NE not scoring 35-40 points a game.

 

Despite the two great Swann grabs in X, XIII was more theatrical by leaps and bounds.

Long touchdown plays left and right.... the Jackie Smith drop....

X was closer for longer, you are definitely right there, but, among other things (perhaps it is because it was the first SB after a 16-game schedule), I see XIII as the first Super Bowl of the era of football that has pretty much lasted 30 years.

Good points about X, though.

 

X had all that, but was still a two-score game in the final minutes, IIRC. It's definitely in the top ten ... I just don't think it's top-five.
