  1. I think my 1943, 1944 and 1945 estimates are very conservative. In 1950, in the All-Star Game in Chicago, he broke his right elbow and he never had the same stroke. He even admitted it multiple times. I don't know, though, how you can say that 5 years of combat missions with John Glenn and Co. could have been any easier on his body than patrolling LF. He didn't enjoy the war like Joe D. He was only 79 HR away from 600. Divide that by 5. He only has to hit an average of 16 per year during that time to hit 600. I think that's a guarantee.

As for your point about where he stood in 1960, rather than 2007, you'd dead on. That's why you're Buck, baby. That's why you're Buck.

Oh, you're definitely right about the first part. I would never argue that his combat missions did less wear-and-tear than a couple extra 154-game seasons. ... But I do think they would have had an effect, by the time Ted was pushing 40. If he plays an extra 450-500 games at ages 26-28, does that cut off about 100 or so from the end of his career? Maybe so, maybe no. ... That's why I'm not in the predicting game. ;)

As for the 16-HR average ... ain't no guarantees in baseball. Otherwise, I wouldn't have missed that Herb Score HOF plaque when I was in Cooperstown last summer. Or that Andruw Jones one, 15 years from now.

Without Lou Merloni and Scott Hatteberg, this poll is woefully incomplete.

I'm sad, because even though I hate baseball I was the first to vote on this poll. And I got it right, back when Williams was still an option.

    Dammit!

Tough call between Foxx and Manny right now. But assuming the Sox keep him another two years, he'll win on longevity in the end.

How come Danny Cater is not on the list?

Wait a minute. Williams was actually an option? I actually thought no one was reading his post correctly. I actually submitted Williams and went back and read the intro. I take back Scott Cooper. Ted Williams it is.

I will fight to the death for Reggie Theus. Or maybe Norm Van Lier. But probably Theus.

I'm a diehard sox fan and that made me laugh.
Amazing what happens when your favorite team wins a couple titles.

Yes. Before he rewrote the poll (the italic part) but after the title, Ted Williams was like the eighth person on the list.

I know. Echan redoing a poll. Fantastic.
