Rudy needs to read Looming Tower. Obviously Ron Paul did. Rudy is not having a good few weeks. Village Voice did story on him that did not put him in very good light.

Boom, I think most GOP primary voters side with Rudy on that particular clash, do they not?

Most likely, but its not a very informed decision on their part if they do. Clearly one of reasons Bin Laden attacked was his resentment of US military presence in Saudi Arabia.

They do. It shows us in detail how much more coherent and literate our own politicians are.

(I can get away with using those adjectives to describe our pols now than Jean Chretien has mercifully retired.)

    Absolutely correct.

And after all this time, there is still never a serious debate about what kinds of things we need to do, what kinds of things we have done, with regard to Middle East policy that have played a part in these attacks.

Instead, it usually takes about 3 nanoseconds for someone to say, "Oh, so you're blaming America for it, huh?!?"

We need some seriously gifted minds in Washington to put everything on the table (foreign policy, military presence, intel, Israel, etc.) and to see if there aren't some things we need to change.

Shock and awe followed by Whack-a-mole is not going to get the job done.

That's a great statement. It puts a whole new perspective on things:

"President George W. Bush, having finally cornered Osama bin Laden, enjoys a tasty snack before administering the coup de grace to his arch-foe."

"The president pauses, giving deep and thoughtful consideration to what he is about to do. He has sentenced terrorists younger than this to the gas chamber. He didn't want to do it. He felt he owed it to them."

"Alas, the president's delay allows bin Laden to escape once again and re-arm, determined to continue the jihad against the American infidels!!"

"After numerous setbacks, the president eventually abandons the struggle, his attention diverted by issues far more demanding of his valuable time, knowledge and expertise."

"He is secure in knowing that when he dies, on his deathbed, he will receive total consciousness. He's got that going for him, which is nice."

  7. Can't agree, Jonesy, for the reasons I stated, and for others on which you can PM me, if you're interested. You don't get to be a shark lawyer, and beat a complete fraud like Lauch Faircloth, and live the life he's lived by being a foof. You want a foof? Look at the Mittster.

Boom's right on the war of terror answer, by the way.

In the early 90's in Khartoum this is what Bin Laden was teaching training classes of soldiers.:

He told Al Qaeda recruits that "while America appeard almighty they are actually weak and cowardly. As example he sighted Viet Nam and Lebanon. When soldiers start to come home in body bags, Americans panic and retreat A country such as US needs only to be hit with a few sharper blows, then it will flee in panic as it always has". America lacks conviction"

Oh, the US has acted with far greater conviction . . . when the country had leaders who were worth a quarter.

  10. But Boom, as you know from the book, what OBL really wanted was the US bogged down in an unwinnable war in an Islamic country, the way the Soviets were in Afghanistan.

    Well, he's half right.

When we are engaged in controversial conflicts of choice 8,000 miles away with little progress to show for our efforts after several years while soldiers come home in body bags . . . Americans do retreat.

Come to our shores, however . . . and I think he might find out different.

"Well, there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade."
