That was a good team, but not as balanced as the one that went to the Super Bowl the next year.

Two huge defensive breakdowns and an offense that kept finding ways to screw up will do that. Of all the big playoff losses under Cowher, that was the worst because that team was so much better than the Chargers. Nowhere near good enough to beat the 49ers that year, but certainly capable of offering a little more resistance.

I actually thought the '94 Steelers were better than '95, but they didn't have a healthy Yancey Thigpen and Neil O'Donnell wasn't playing over his head in '95. That '95 team never really had Rod Woodson. That was the year he blew out his knee in the opener and returned as a nickleback in Super Bowl XXX, with Lake having to shift over to corner. They also couldn't find a consistent running game. But they still had a strong front seven on defense and an offense that had strong pass protectors and a very deep group of receivers. Easily Cowher's best coaching job with the way that team had to adapt on offense and defense.

That said, those Cowboys teams were just ridiculous on offense. So much talent. And while I don't think Aikman belongs in the top 10 all-time, the guy certainly made you pay if you couldn't get to him.

Defense only gave up 17 points. Offense should have scored more than 13.

Those mid-'90s Steelers teams had crazy depth.
As seen by marginal starters later going elsewhere and getting big money.
And them not losing a beat.

To be fair, there aren't very many teams in NFL history that would've been evenly matched with those Super Bowl winners. With the exception of the '87 Redskins, whose quarterback might've played the best 15 minutes of football in the history of the position that day, all of the champions on that list are among the 10 best teams of the Super Bowl era. Same with the '85 Patriots and Bears.
