Well, as long as it keeps out an owner with actual money and an interest in hockey while continuing to welcome fraud artists into the ranks (Bruce McNall, John Spano, John Rigas, Sanjay Kumar, Henry Samueli, Boots DoucheBaggio) and encouraging others to play shell games with franchises (the Gunds, Craig Leopold), the NHL will not achieve what Gary Bettman most wishes for - legitimacy and mass public acceptance south of the border.

It makes you wonder if Bernard Madoff would have tipped off authorities sooner to what he was doing had he bought an NHL franchise.

NHL is going to want the Coyotes to move into a region that already has a rink that NHL ready--or can quickly build a NHL ready rink (complete with the luxury boxes and other revenue generators).

I would think Hamilton, Vegas and Kansas City would be the front runners.

Not that anyone wants to hear me go through this again... but no. Nobody went to the Jets games. That's why they left. The team had no fan support, and from everything I've seen there still isn't the corporate support in Winnipeg to think the situation would be any better. The Coyotes' worst average attendance in Glendale is still better than they ever did in Winnipeg.

The Coyotes chief problem at the moment isn't the way the team is losing money, because that situation is actually improving. The immediate issue is that the owner has no money because his primary business is trucking. He didn't have particularly deep pockets to begin with, and when gas prices soared he lost his ass.

The Coyotes have a lot of problems, but if the league can somehow find an owner that wants to keep them in place they can probably survive long-term. It worked in Pittsburgh and Ottawa. Phoenix is still a more viable market than Vegas or KC, and it's still a lot better than Winnipeg.

I agree about Winnipeg, but if you can't see the difference between the pittsburgh and Ottawa markets and Phoenix I think you're crazy

Not quite sure what that means.

Pittsburgh and Ottawa had failing owners, the NHL got involved, and now both franchises are in much better shape.

Phoenix has a failing owner and now the league is getting involved. That's the extent of the comparison I made.

Phoenix has the advantage of a much bigger metro area and a much better arena than Pittsburgh. I don't see any particularly compelling reason why it could work in Pittsburgh and not Phoenix.

Pittsburgh and Ottawa have a base of fans who love hockey. Phoenix has 4 tickets for 80 dollars which includes parking, a hot dog and drink. Junior hockey is more expensive in both Canada and the US

Glendale has quietly been letting the Coyotes play without paying the rent, worth up to $4 million. So quietly, no one ever told the city council. They're not happy.

The city is giving the team the multimillion-dollar break even as it tries to plug a multimillion-dollar hole in its own budget.

"They're using that money for their operating money when it should have been paid to the City of Glendale," said Councilman Phil Lieberman.

Council members who were informed of the bailout by 12 News said it was news to them.

"Absolutely I should have been told," said Lieberman, a member of the city council for 17 years. Joyce Clark, who represents the district that's home to the Coyotes, also said she was never informed.

Glendale spokeswoman Julie Frisoni declined to make City Manager Ed Beasley available for an interview, citing policy not to discuss ongoing negotiations.

She did say there was no need to notify council members because the break on the lease was part of a change to an agreement, not an entirely new agreement the council would have to vote on.

One amusing side note to this - 12 News is KPNX, the Gannett-owned TV station here. The Glendale spokeswoman who is refusing to make the city manager available for an interview happens to be a former Executive Producer at KPNX.

The team's never won a playoff series in more than 10 years in Arizona. You can't judge whether a market's suitable for the NHL (or any league) if the team has been crap for more than a decade.
