    Is Galveston an anti-war song?

Jimmy Webb (the writer of the song) has said that it was about the Spanish-American War rather than Vietnam, and that it was written more as a "slice of life" about a young soldier away from home who just wants to survive and get back to his hometown to see his sweetheart. In that sense, it could fit into any generation, although I guess it's hard to not have that song come out in the late-1960s and carry some additional emotional significance.
