Glee

  1. For a change, Fox actually decided to run something with compelling characters, instead of investing time into the storylines only. Well done.

I loved the last 45 minutes, but did the first 15 really feel like it was poorly edited? It felt as if scenes had been cut.

Despite that, I had a smile on my face for most of the last half, especially the rival school's song and the final number.

I somehow, despite the 80000000 commercials, forgot to set my Tivo. Poop. I'll find it online somewhere I suppose.

I gave it less than 5 minutes and then switched to Lakers-Nuggets. I will try to watch the rest, but I think I can't objectively judge a show like this. I am automatically going to be annoyed by it and hate it, even if most people think it is good. I am just not in the mainstream, if this turns out to be a successful show.

For what it's worth, in my market the ratings took a pretty huge dropoff after the first 15 minutes. The first 15 minutes got an 8 rating, but it dropped to a 5 the rest of the way.

American Idol ended on a 13, so that's not a great performance. It had some fairly tough competition in the time slot, though.

Psh! I was tired yesterday! :D

I missed the first 10 minutes but loved what I saw. Wish I didn't have to wait so damn long to see it.

And just cause I've listened to it quite a few times already:

I guess "Cop Rock" was just 20 years ahead of its time. Musical series are BACK!

Also, if anybody's looking for a great show, check out All the Small Things, which just wrapped up on the BBC. It's a little tough to find, but it's online. If you like Glee, you'll like it.

What obviously separates this from Cop Rock or Viva Laughlin is being tethered to reality. Kids sing in glee clubs, all over the country. This allows us to pull for the characters in a real way; breaking into song tends to undercut the built-in gravitas of a police sergeant or casino owner, for instance.

According to people in another community that saw an early pilot, they did edit the beginning significantly. Matthew Morrison (the teacher) sang "Leaving on a Jet Plane" that was cut, plus he did a narrative beginning to set the stage. Not many people who saw both preferred the actual aired version.

I now must go and look for the unaired pilot.

I have no idea how someone could watch the last five minutes of the pilot and not be smitten with it.

It moved somewhat slow, but the end was absolutely infectious.
