Seeing Mick Jagger on SNL got me reving up my Stones collection.

Got me thinking about Gimme Shelter. Which back up singer do you prefer -The Merry Clayton version ( original ) or Lisa Fischer ( since 1987)

Merry Clayton. Though Lisa can bring it, too.

I go back and forth although this is a pretty sweet extended version with Lisa Fischer.

    Both have amazing pipes.

I should have added that it wasn't a knock on Lisa (who I've met and who is lovely).

In case you haven't heard the isolated vocal track:

Cool link. I've never heard that before. Love hearing the
    crackling of the LP.

Mary Blige singing on current tour just wrecks the song. Bring back Lisa Fisher.

Either is fine by me. Wonderful lyrics. Forget how sweet Richards was/is thinking about his speaking skills.

Just watched 20 feet from Stardom. It's a documentary about back up singers like
Lisa Fisher, Merri Clayton and the most famous Darlene Love.

If you like rock music it's very entertaining and insightful. Amazing how many songs
that those 3 were involved in that you would have never known. For example Merri Clayton did background for Sweet Home Alabama.

Here is a Times interview with the 3. Did not know that Lisa Fisher
and Merri Clayton were actually friends.

Maybe off-topic a bit, but here are two covers of Gimme Shelter that I really like.

Merry Clayton did a track on the Dirty Dancing score.
Dirty Dancing is one of Fart's weaknesses.
    Shut up.
