good catch. Brian wasn't physically deceased at the time, just musically dead.

"Gimme Shelter" isn't my fave Stones song but it has one of the greatest beginnings of any rock song ever.

Think so. I know Scorsese has used it three times.

There was an interview with him about it in EW, maybe. He said he was thinking about what song to use to start The Departed, and he was stuck in traffic in New York, and this crazy dude in the car next to him was screaming Gimme Shelter at the top of his lungs, and Marty was like, Fuck it, I'm using it again.

Like he says, that song just signals some bad shit is going to happen.

My favorite Scorsese opening, though, is the start of Mean Streets -- I think with Be My Baby. Fucking love that.

I'd be curious to know just how many Stones songs Scorsese has used in his movies.

Off the top of my head there's Gimmie Shelter, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Monkey Man, Memo From Turner, Heart Of Stone, maybe more? He usually collaborates with ex-Band member Robbie Robertson to pick his songs.

'Can't You Hear Me Knockin'' is a very under-rated song.

Wow. I had no idea Sweet Virginia was in Casino. That's as cool as Memo From Turner being in GoodFellas.

To this day, when I close my trunk, I'll have the opening drum beats and slide guitar from Memo From Turner in my head. Great scene.
