He was monumental from '06 to '09. Fast track to the Hall of Fame.

The injuries ended all of that. He's been anywhere from pedestrian to pretty good since. And it's too bad.

    But he isn't getting in.

The only thing that will really help him -- there's no catcher in the pipeline ahead of him. Pudge went in right away, Posada fell off right away. There is no one worth anything through the 2021 ballot. His only competition is probably going to be Molina. The next would be, maybe McCann, before Posey is up well after they hit the ballot. So there won't be too much of a comparison against the rest of the ballot. I think he's going to get a significant portion of the full ballot voters.

His stats have pretty much gone off a cliff the last four years though. He has been slugging 370-ish for four straight seasons. His on base percentage has still beeen good, with three of the four over .360. But he's 34 and has about as much pop as spike Owen. Tough to see bc he looked like a first ballot type, but more and more he's looking like someone who could get the Don Mattingly treatment from the hall voters.

IMG_3559.PNG IMG_3558.PNG Sadly, wasn't that far off. Mauer is slugging similarly to a late model spike Owen

LOL it was just meant to commemorate a Spike Owen reference.

To boot, Spike was a good player in the original RBI Baseball.

And a damn solid player on those U of Texas teams with Clemens and IIRC Billy Swift

    Edit: Calvin Schiraldi, not Swift

The positive about his lack of power is that he's never really had it in regards to home runs. So it's not like a guy who always hit 30-plus and then now is struggling to get to double-digits and you say, man what a shame what happened to him. If he can be a league-average player the next couple of years, get to 30 or so doubles with a good on-base, I think he will be a late writers pick because the counting numbers will look a lot better.
