But while many stereotypes are quietly accepted and propogated, there always seems to be a disproportional level of outrage over even the most benign of mistakes (as Beckham's obviously was) when the offended party is the gay community. IMHO, that reaction only hurts the cause and makes many who are otherwise supportive of gay rights simply roll their eyes.

Unless you've honestly never made fun of another human being for any reason -- short, fat, bald, ugly, smelly, etc. -- please get off your damn high horse and understand that eliminating prejudice among a population as large and diverse as the U.S. is going to be a long, occasionally painful process.

And yes, just like the rest of us, even the gays occasionally need to get over themselves.

Sorry, but no sale. Using a slur against a minority group is not acceptable. Period. End of story. No matter what bullshit comparisons you want to make to it.

And no, I don't think those stereotypes you mentioned are appropriate, either.

That said, the appropriate comparison would be if someone were to use the word "Irish" as an insult, or "religious" for that matter.

Fat is a better comparison, though as I said before, you can't really count that as a minority any more in this country.

Homosexuals have been imprisoned for being homosexuals in many Western countries. And do you think Matthew Shepherd is the only person ever killed for being a homosexual? Whether it's legally condoned or not, it has happened and will likely happen again until they achieve equality and attitudes change. And that means calling people out for using 'gay' as an insult.
