I have often jokingly referred to "Dancing With the Stars" as "the gay Olympics."

It's playing off a light-hearted stereotype for humor. Does it push the envelope? I guess. Same as calling the NBA All-Star weekend the "black New Year's Eve."

It's different than what Getz did. Not that anyone is "outraged" over his scrawl in the dirt. "Outrage" is a loaded word. But the point is that context plays a role here.

 

Let's not forget that the Gay Olympics are actually the, um, Gay Olympics.

Homosexuals have been imprisoned for being homosexuals in many Western countries. And do you think Matthew Shepherd is the only person ever killed for being a homosexual? Whether it's legally condoned or not, it has happened and will likely happen again until they achieve equality and attitudes change. And that means calling people out for using 'gay' as an insult.

A man was killed in a gay bashing last year in Toronto. It happens everywhere. This is not speculation, this is fact.

 

Funny that Elton John should be mentioned as a gay performer, who's so successful, he's never had to deal with discrimination.

This is a guy who got married for Pete's sake in order to live a "heterosexual lifestyle". (And, he was engaged to someone else before that.)

He crawled out of the closet, first talking about being bi-sexual.

Now, maybe it took him a while to come to terms with his own sexuality, but even if that's true, it's likely because of the obstacles homosexuals face.

He might be the gayest guy you can think of, and he may be terribly successful, but I wouldn't say it's been easy for him.
