This doesn't sound good. E-mail I just got:

Benny Parsons Hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center

    CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 5, 2007) - 1973 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Benny
Parsons is currently hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the
    Carolinas Medial Center in Charlotte.
Parsons, who became a popular television and radio personality after
retiring from driving in 1988, entered the hospital Dec. 26 as the result of
complications stemming from his battle with lung cancer.
The cancer was diagnosed earlier this year and was recently reported
    to be in full remission.
Parsons' family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support
from fans and the NASCAR community and they encourage everyone to keep Benny
in their thoughts and prayers. Parsons is not allowed visitors at this time,
but fans and associates can continue to send him messages at bp@goprn.com.

I don't like hearing that about Benny. I'm not a big NASCAR watcher, but I love listening to Benny's observations and his work.

I hope Benny gets well for Daytona. I truly do.

I hope too Benny gets well ... but anyone else note the revisionist spin here?

In 1973, it was the WINSTON Cup. And Benny has lung cancer.

Had posted something on the NASCAR thread, but maybe it got buried there.

Despite the good spin that was being put on this over the summer, you knew things didn't sound good from the start.

By the way, BP was Rachel Ray before Rachel was gallivanting everywhere. Some of those ESPN bits were pretty funny.

Damn... he's a class act and a genuine guy...

Always did wonder how a "former Detroit cabbie" could sound like that tho...

That kind of spin is pretty old. They always used to list King Richard as a seven-time Winston Cup champion despite the fact that only four of his titles were won during the Winston era.

What I could never figure out was why, if the big class of NASCAR used to be called Grand National before Winston, did they turn around and give that name to the Busch series? Didn't the second tier used to be called Sportsman?
