    when gerard baker wrote his last column for the american bureau of the london times a few days ago, i lamented the loss of one of the few financial writers whom i respect.

    now i find that gerard is taking over as deputy editor in chief(whatever that is) of the wall street journal just before another round of personnel cuts.

    it is unknown whether mr. baker will do some writing for the journal.
