I think David Hale's office walls will soon with cluttered with awards, if they aren't already.

Holy Christ. What's next -- best sports event story on deadline (pro sports) that was published on a monday in a month that begins with the letter J when the temperature was 75 or below?

this is one of the best contests around. gswa is a great organization and its awards are the best i've been around. you'd be shocked to see all the hard work and all the people who judge these things.

congrats to all the winners. trust me, when i was there, we took these seriously. find out the judges on this before you talk. claude felton usually gets the best in the biz to help him in the judging. not sure if stan awtry is still running the deal, but it's tough to beat the job he does (or did) there

congrats to all the winners. many, many familiar names and folks i haven't talked to for a while, but there are some great journalists in the state

and i miss winning all sorts of money off of paul newberry and chip towers at the poker table during the awards

There are an awful lot of categories there, Hoops.
Seems to lessen the value of the awards just a bit.

It's been that way as long as I can remember. I used to think it was just a way to raise more money by getting people to enter 8-10 categories each.

It is nice that they do it, though. Not every state has one of these, I don't think.

Furman Bisher, best columnist? He's not even close to being the best columnist at his own paper, much less the state. Look, he can still provide an interesting read, but if you want to pass Furman some kudos, how about a lifetime achievement award (which would be heartily deserving) as opposed to dropping a best columnist award in his lap.

My only qualm with this setup is that the same person can win multiple places in best columnist. I understand one can enter more than once. Just seems like if the judges pick the same guy twice, someone should go, "Uh...who finished fourth?" and bump that person up.

Yeah, too bad those walls aren't at a newspaper these days. VERY good journalist who had enough and voluntarily took it elsewhere.

What you really miss, hoops, is getting drunk at the poker table playing guts, then waking up for a 9 a.m. tee time in which I carry your ass to victory.

    just sayin'

Seriously? He won all those awards and he's out of the business? That's a shame.
