    Russians come to the line, their own 38. Third and three, crowd roaring at them. Come on you guys, hunker down here. They caught us by surprise right at the start and we've been trying to scratch and claw and fight our way back into this thing, but Lady Luck just keeps standing there, shaking her head at us "No, no."

    On a serious note...this apparently has been in the works for a while, at least if the concentration of Russian forces is an indication. It seems there's a lot of stuff in play, here. I can't say this comes as a surprise:

    "The crisis, the first to confront Russian President Dmitry Medvedev since he took office in May, has flared in a region emerging as a key energy transit route, and where Russia and the West are vying for influence."

    But also, Georgia responding to Russia's attacks may apparently put a strain on Georgia's solid Western-world relations by requiring support. Russia's alleging reports of ethnic cleansing, and more than 1,000 people dead. It's all from a good report here:
