Gay Talese: "What I Read"

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by brandonsneed, Jul 2, 2011.

  1. Wholly unrelated to what he reads ...
I'm envious the guy has two dogs and pays a frenchwoman to walk them.
You work from home, go to a gym to work out but you can't walk the dog?

On topic... I loved the way he put together "Frank Sinatra has a cold."

  2. I never heard of this ... Googled it... from Wiki... WTF!!!!

Was Talese married at the time as well?

So does Gay Talese openly refuse to have sex with Gary Smith?

Yeah, but if you let him know how good the sex is he might try it this weekend. Just for a bit.

More likely Sally Jenkins since he thinks the WAPO is irrelevant.

I love Talese, but reading that article made me feel like Lennie Briscoe being condescended to by some snobby Park Ave. murder suspect.

Almost as bad as this: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2080867_2080832_2080835,00.html

Harold Bloom wins the insufferable windbag award for most obnoxious: "I always reread what I always reread: Shakespeare, Dante, Homer, Cervantes. They are better to read and reread than anybody else."

Talese is in a world of his own.

It is what it is, and nice work, if you can get it.

Really nothing earth shattering or reveling. Talese is living the consummate New Yorker upper class life.

He sounds a bit like Mr Pitt from Seinfeld or at least a Seinfeld character.

Not sure I understand the indictment here. Bloom is certainly a windbag on any number of counts - but finding joy in a re-reading of the greats probably shouldn't be one of them.

Maybe he does re-read the classics - Personally, I don't know if I've knowingly re-read any book other than Travels with Charley. There is just too much other stuff out there I want to get to.
Got a Kindle for Christmas and I re-gifted it to a sister (with the givers consent) simply because I have dozens of books on my shelf I still have on my "to-do" list.
And yes, I'd trade lives with Talese in a hearbeat.

You'd be surprised what you can get out of a re-reading. Also, he's a classics scholar.
