Garnett to Celtics talks back on

With the status of the Eastern Conference, there's no such thing as mortaging the future.

How long have the Celtics sucked?

    This is a good move.

I don't follow basketball at all, but I do know that by far the most important thing to Garnett is winning a title. If he's OK with the deal, he thinks the Celtics have a chance to win one.

If I'm a Celtics fan, what else matters?

Jeez, and I thought it was a bit too much BEFORE learning about the first round picks.

If this is true, Ainge has stripped Boston's long-term future bare for quite a few years with the Allen and Garnett deals. Anything short of the NBA finals THIS year would be an unfair price for gutting the franchise's future so dramatically.

How many balls does this team need?

Sam Cassell was not included in the deal. ;)

Too bad. Cassell would be GREAT for the C's right now. But his body just can't hack it anymore.

    True.

But what about Allen? And Pierce? They haven't declined badly either. And they have a legit shot at the Finals if they can fill in around these dudes with some solid, unselfish pros. If that happens, I suspect Celtics fans will be just fine for a little while.

But this whole team will hit the wall of age and decline at the same time, and it won't be pretty with no way to quickly rebuild. The Celtics already went through that with the Bird/McHale/Parish group.

Again, it's the NBA Eastern Conference.

One draft and you're rebuilt. Unless you're the Knicks.

  8. I don't understand ripping this trade.
Green has no understanding of the game, Telfair is brutal, Gomes is no better than a seventh or eighth man and b/c of the Allen deal the C's first-round picks would have been middle of the road anyway. It's not like they'd be getting Derrick Rose or OJ Mayo.
Now they have a nucleus that should blow LeBron out the water for a few years, assuming KG reups with Boston.
Rondo at point could be problem, but as Cleveland proved not too big of a problem.

I like Rondo. He'll grow into a solid playmaker.

I gather Ainge is in the final two years of his contract. Man, first thought I had was another Herschel Walker trade. What are the Celtics going to play, a 1-2 zone? And what if one of the big three get hurt? Game over. This trade is looking like a payday loan.

To your P.S. that's the biggest thing. There's this misconception that Garnett has lost something. The only thing that has happened is he's been stuck with virtually no supporting cast so no one gets to see him in the playoffs. He's still a top 15 talent (at worst) in the league. He may not put up as big of numbers scoring but playing with Pierce and Allen he won't need to. I'd say the big question mark is point guard. Is Rondo ready to play 30-35 minutes on a playoff team? And who's his back-up, Pruitt? Pretty unproven duo. They need to get a vet, is Knight still available?

The bench won't be the strongest, but Tony Allen, Gomes (or Perkins depending on who starts), Scalabrine, Big Baby and Leon Powe are all serviceable.

I think a lot of people think Gerald Green is better than he is, probably based on the dunk contest and his athleticism. I mean his game does look OK, but it just doesn't seem that many around the league are all that high on him. Most likely that's because of his game outside of scoring, which is rather nonexistent. I'm not sure if being taken under Ricky Davis' wing is exactly the path to success either, especially when it comes to doing more than just scoring.
