The (NJ)Record cuts and furloughs staffers but keeps the lousy Paterson Press freelancer?! What a joke!

Assuming there’s gonna be more bloodletting at Gannett this year, wonder what this means for any diversity initiatives. If they aren’t hiring anyone, only cutting, what are they doing to ensure they are equal opportunity employers?

From talking to friends and former co-workers at my old Gannett shop, it sounds like where they really fucked up was inserting the $38k tipping point for who was exempt and who had to take furloughs.

While they all knew they were underpaid, seeing some of the deadweight that had to take them (and making more than $38k) while some of the better and more productive people were exempt and making less than $38k really hit home.

They'd have been better off making it a blanket decision, or even just managers only or salaried only.
