The Herald-Times in Bloomington, IN, has an opening for a full-time news reporter. We are reaching out to sports journalists because we believe the best writing and storytelling often appears in the sports sections, and we want to spread that talent to the news pages.
In fact, we already have. The last time we posted a sports job on this site we hired two candidates, one for the sports writing job we intended to fill and the other for a news writing job that came open before the dust settled on the first hire.
This time, we’re looking for a committed journalist who believes going into news instead of sports could be a good move and not necessarily temporary. Our new hire will be reporting on city government and urban issues, writing news and features, and focusing on the stories that affect the lives of residents. The position requires a self-starter with ideas and understanding of local government and urban living in a Big Ten university city or a similar community. It also requires a strong interest in going beyond the routine through watchdog and explanatory journalism. The preferred candidate will have at least a year of reporting experience and have a strong interest in working on digital platforms with video and photos as well as written words. Experience with web site content management systems preferred. Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Email cover letter, resume and three writing samples to ksutton@heraldt.com. Deadline to apply is Thursday, Sept. 13
