The Hyatt of course is right by the Superdome and has not reopened since Katrina. Likewise the shopping mall next to it.

I stayed at the Bienville House. I'd recommend it.

If you want to roll the dice on a B&B, try the Cornstalk Hotel. It's a ways down Royal from Canal though.

We stayed there pre-hurricane and really liked it.

If you want to go B&B, I'd recommend this one:

It's a little out of the quarter, but a cheap cab ride/short drive to the Quarter. It's on Magazine, which has a ton of cool little shops, and just down the street is Juan's Flying Burritos.

The Prince Conti has a sister hotel, the Hotel St. Marie, that I highly recommend. Stayed there a couple months before Katrina. Reasonable rates (around $100 a night), rooms with balconies, and a great location on Toulouse, about a block from Bourbon. They have a parking garage. And you're close enough to Bourbon to be there in about 90 seconds, but far enough down the block that you don't hear all the noise.

    Decision was made for me.

Buddy works for Academy and gets discounts through LaQuinta. Turns out, he's got enough points to get four nights - just what we were looking for - for free.

Certainly close enough to the Quarter that the free trip is worth it, don't you think?

What good watering holes are there on that side of Canal before you get to Poydras? I think I've heard of a couple, but can't recall their names.
