Re: FOX/CNN/MSNBC: Moqtada Al Sadr Flees to Iran

Feb. 13, 2007 — The story tonight in Iraq is not the arrival of more U.S. troops, but the departure of one of the country's most powerful men, Moqtada al Sadr and members of his army.

According to senior military officials al Sadr left Baghdad two to three weeks ago, and fled to Tehran, Iran, where he has family.

Al Sadr commands the Mahdi Army, one of the most formidable insurgent militias in Iraq, and his move coincides with the announced U.S. troop surge in Baghdad.

Sources believe al Sadr is worried about an increase of 20,000 U.S. troops in the Iraqi capital. One official told ABC News' Martha Raddatz, "He is scared he will get a JDAM [bomb] dropped on his house."

Sources say some of the Mahdi army leadership went with al Sadr.

Though he is gone for now, many think al Sadr is not gone for good. In Tehran he is trying to keep the Madhi militia together.

In recent months al Sadr has come to the political table to force change rather than using military force to have an impact. Sources say an even more extreme faction within his militia isn't pleased with this turn of events, and is trying to force the cleric to respond to recent Sunni attacks with more violence.

U.S. officials say they are going to watch those member of the Mahdi army left behind in Baghdad. Sources say two scenarios are possible: Either al Sadr will be driven further into extremist mode or he will continue going forward with the political proce http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/IraqCoverage/story?id=2872953

Forget the NK nonsense, if this is true, it's outstanding news.

Just goes to show you that the troop increase which should have happened to begin with is what the doctor ordered. His militia is disarray and his control is dwindling. We are now doing the right things in Iraq but in the beginning we severely under estimated our opponents and did not count on this insurgency. We are now finally making the adjustments we need to get this situation to be successful and one that our future presidents can look back on and thank GW.

Should have bombed as far back as May of 2004. Letting him even have the chance to get to Iran was a big mistake. His fat ass should have been killed a long time ago.

The same thing was said after the handover of the government and Bremer's departure.

The same thing was said after Saddam was captured.

The same thing was said after Zarqawi was killed.

The same thing was said after each of three nationwide elections.

The same thing was said after Saddam was hanged.

So what's different? This was Sadr's strategy from the get-go: To lay low until our troops do what they've done from the beginning, that is, secure the objective and then leave.

Future presidents will look back and thank W only for being such a fuck-up that they themselves can't possibly be any worse.

Even assuming this is true, and not a convenient burst of misinformation.

No sightings of the guy in Teheran. Anonymous speculation on why he may have gone there. Fox News.
I'll wait on the parade, thanks.

NPR reported this morning that al Sadr's officials have issued a statment saying he's not in Iran, but still in Iraq. They wouldn't say where in Iraq, so it might be OK to say he's left Baghdad.

They also reported that the Iraqi Prime Minister (forget his name, now) has taken al Sadr off the "do not kill or apprehend" list the U.S. had put him on.

So, can we kill him or not. I vote we don't kill him, but eff up his army.

    Any thoughts?
