(April 12, 2007) — Gannett Co. Inc. said today it has agreed to sell four newspapers, including the Utica Observer-Dispatch, to Perinton, N.Y.-based GateHouse Media for $410 million.

The deal, which requires regulatory approval, is expected to close at the end of the month.

The other three papers are the Norwich Bulletin of Connecticut; the Rockford Register Star of Illinois; and the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington, W.Va.

“This sale makes perfect sense for Gannett as we move forward under our strategic plan,” Sue Clark-Johnson, president of Gannett’s Newspaper Division, said in a statement. “It’s very difficult to say good-bye. We deeply appreciate all the hard work by the employees of these terrific newspapers over the many years they have been part of the Gannett family.”

Gannett had owned the Utica newspaper since 1922.
