Not really. South Florida is way more expensive than say Atlanta or Houston or Nashville or even Tampa and Orlando.

Here's the link to the bankrate.com cost of living calculator if you want to check. If you make $40,000 in Atlanta, you need to make more than $48000 in Fort Lauderdale to maintain the same standard of living. That's a 20% jump.

    Pipeline, as always, never fails.
    The official announcement:

We're delighted to announce that Kathy Laughlin is our new Sports Editor.

Kathy, who started at the Sun-Sentinel as an intern in 1987, knows the newspaper, the staff and the market. She is a strong editor who enjoys the respect of the staff. Kathy brings energy and enthusiasm to what will be a challenging future.

After returning to the paper in 1999 from the Miami Herald, Kathy's worked on the night desk as a senior copy editor and, since 2005, as an assistant sports editor. Kathy has overseen high school/preps coverage and, more recently, the Dolphins, Panthers, FAU, Ethan Skolnick and Charlie Bricker. The Nova High School and UF graduate also worked at the The Plain Dealer and The (Lakeland) Ledger.

Kathy is a member of the Association for Women in Sports Media and helped organize its February 2008 convention in Coconut Grove.

Please join us in congratulating Kathy.

We also want to thank Tom Christensen for stepping up to oversee the department during this interim period. Tom's been a rock and we appreciate his time and effort.

    Sharon and Earl

Ace will note SHE was good enough to work at the Plain Dealer.

She must be pretty heavy-duty considering the Sun-Sentinel had a nationwide search.

YAY, Kathy! Congratulations and good luck running one of the best papers in Florida.

    And no, I don't work there. :)

But surely not one of the best sports sections in Florida, right?

It was for quite a while. I know they've had their share of problems.
