Edit: Did the story spell his name right? When he was in the bigs, I thought he went by Jeremi Gonzalez?

Edit II: Baseball Reference says it is Geremi, but he sometimes went by Jeremi during his career.

 

That was my first thought, too. Well, my second thought ... after how sad that is.

RIP Mr. Gonzalez.

 

I remember him as Jeremi, as well.

And yeah, I'm positive he went by Jeremi when he was with the Cubs. I'd make some crack about changing his name to protect the innocent but that would be inappropriate.

 

According to the crawl on ESPN, he changed his name in 2006.

 

I think his given name was Geremi, but he went by Jeremi when he pitched for the Cubs.

He was a very good, promising young pitcher when he came up in 1998, really helped carry the Cubs for a while (along with Kerry Wood), and then both he & Wood suffered arm problems.

 

Lightning is so dangerous. This is sad.

But doesn't Hendry's statement sound like he had no idea who the guy was, and just said "quick! get me a fact sheet!"

 

Quit giving him static about the way he spelled his name.
