Holy crap, ESPN just showed some old B-roll on Newell coaching Shaquille O'Neill about 125 or so pounds ago. Amazing.

On top of everything else, he was great to the media. Did a freelance gig a decade ago and, needing one more source for some info on a big kid, called him in California at 9 a.m.... Buckeye State time.

After answering his phone in a groggy 6 a.m. local time voice, he found it in his heart to forgive a young guy trying to make a dent and was nothing short of terrific.

    RIP, Mr. Newell

It would be nice to imagine Abe Lemons looking up from his poker hand and seeing Coach Newell.

"Pull up a chair, Pete, and we'll deal you in."

  4. It's nice to think that Abe is still around somewhere.
    Ahh, gawdam.

great column, as usual, by bruce jenkins. most underrated sportswriter in the nation, and probably the best pure baseball writer there is.
