For the Wilco fans

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Cosmo, Jun 6, 2009.

  1. For the record, I love Ghost. I love how the band went Neil Young-esque and experimented with more noise. Great album, but still 4th.

Oh damn I gotta get in on this one.

    Albums:

    1. Being There
    2. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    3. A Ghost is Born
    4. Summerteeth
    5. A.M.
    6. Sky Blue Sky

Now, that doesn't mean I dislike any of them. But Being There, especially disc 1, is the best pure, guitar-driven rock and roll this band has ever produced. That's also why Ghost ranks so high on my list. If that makes me shallow, I don't care. As for songs:

    1. War on War
    2. Impossible Germany
    3. Hotel Arizona
    4. Via Chicago
    5. Far, Far Away
    6. Kamera (particularly their "Troggs" version)
    7. At Least That's What You Said
    8. Forget the Flowers
    9. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
    10. Handshake Drugs

Looking forward to the new disc. These guys have yet to disappoint.

OK, back with songs. Not including the Mermaid Avenues in this, but California Stars would be top 3 and Hesitating Beauty would also crack the top 10.

    1. Heavy Metal Drummer
    2. Say You Miss Me
    3. Via Chicago
    4. The Late Greats
    5. Poor Places
    6. At Least That's What You Said
    7. Handshake Drugs
    8. Ashes Of American Flags
    9. Red-Eyed And Blue
    10. Far, Far Away

Just missed the cut: Dreamer In My Dreams, Jesus Etc., Summer Teeth, Too Far Apart, Casino Queen

I don't think they've become less edgy. Listen to "Bull Black Nova" on the new one. What's interesting/great about Wilco is that each album seems to be quite different, which makes it hard to rank them. I've heard a review of the new record, however, that said this one seems to have a little of all of the previous ones. I like what I've heard so far.

Wilco is a great, great live band, though. Watch the new "Ashes of American Flags" DVD. I saw them twice on that tour and both shows rocked.

Funny thing, I didn't think I liked A Ghost is Born very much, but I loved, loved, loved "Kicking Television," the live album -- especially the Ghost songs.

I'm going to have a hard time ranking records and songs. Maybe I will later, but here's a shout out to "Remember the Mountain Bed" off Mermaid II.

For those who haven't checked out the Ashes DVD Kato mentioned, you get a free audio download of all of the songs to go with it.

I loved the brass section they had on the last tour. Saw them outside of Raleigh and the Total Pros were supporting, making songs like "Hate It Here" and "Monday" even better.

Black Bull Nova is so awesome, and yeah, the new record is much less of a departure from its predecessor than anything they've done yet. The sound is fairly similar to SBS, but this time the songwriting is much better and there aren't any real clunkers (Shake It Off, Leave Me Like You Found Me).

If anyone is going to the Wilmington, DE show July 10, PM me ... it's the only one I can make it to due to work conflicts. Wouldn't mind saying hello to fellow SJ Wilco nuts.
