One of the legendary Canadian social activists who helped FOUND more than fifty organizations including Canada's first shelter for abused women and the first hospice for AIDS sufferers.

She was married to the great sportsrwiter Trent Frayne.

"Lawyer Frank Addario described her modus operandi. Usually, she would invite him to meet her for lunch, he recalled this weekend, and then she would start in by saying, "I need your legal opinion on something."

Then she would go on to explain that "the government was not taking care of . . ." -- here she would name her latest cause. "Suppose three gracefully aging women were to occupy the minister's office until he smartens up. Would that be illegal? Would they be arrested? Would they get bail in time to make dinner for Himself [her beloved husband sportswriter Trent Frayne]?" And then she would deliver the kicker: "And would you be free to represent them?"

June Callwood was truly a great social activist in Canada. Her impact on Canadian society will not be forgotten as will her dedication of helping those in need, especially those who contracted AIDS and those who were abused. Truly, a great loss.
