Really the only thing subject to copyright is the name of the font.
You could reproduce every shape in that font family and rename it Federal Gighway.

 

They've already started changing some of the signs around here.

 

That's because signs have finite lives. I think it's only a year or two before the reflective qualities in them wear out.

We can put a man on the moon, you'd figure we could create a highway sign that lasts more than 24 months.

I like the font that highway signs use in the UK.

 

I'm not taking traffic advice from a country that drives on the wrong side of the road.
