    From the story:

    Is that right? Cities and states have to pay to use that font? Why can't the FHWA come up with one that's in the public domain, or have someone in the government design one that everyone can use?
    Even though it's a small amount, that seems weird.

    Really the only thing subject to copyright is the name of the font.
    You could reproduce every shape in that font family and rename it Federal Gighway.

    They've already started changing some of the signs around here.

    That's because signs have finite lives. I think it's only a year or two before the reflective qualities in them wear out.

    We can put a man on the moon, you'd figure we could create a highway sign that lasts more than 24 months.
