It's not so much that extra-curriculars are different as it is that underage drinking is against the law.

Okay. Most athletes can be suspended for smoking, even if they are 18.

Again, what were the consequences?

If the kid thinks he's getting detention and feels that going to the dance would be worth it, then I'm fine with the point.

The problem is the "consequences" weren't exactly laid out before the crime took place. It would be like finding out that the pack of gum you stole carries a punishment of death.

The consequences were spelled out very clearly in the code of honor or whatever the hell it was called that every student and their parents signed when they enrolled in the school. It wasn't a trick question.
